The office of University Communications was formed in 2007 to serve the faculty and staff of the Southern Illinois University Carbondale campus and the Office of the President. There are seven units that make up the office and serve the campus and University community: Barking Dawg Productions, Creative Services, Public Relations, University Photocommunications, Web Services, Marketing Research and University Initiatives and Communication Outreach.

An eighth unit, Administration and Finance, provides administrative support to the seven service units and is responsible for budget, facilities, and personnel.

The employees of the eight units report to a Director who is responsible for all activities of the unit. Each of the seven unit Directors report to the Communications Director who oversees the office of University Communications.
